Each 10 mL contains:

Calcium levulinate 500 mg + water for injection 10 mL

The active ingredient in chlorphenamine injection, ChlorphenamineMaleate is also known as Chlorpheniramine Maleate.

WHAT IS CHLORPHENAMINE INJECTION?

Each 1ml ampoule of chlorphenamine injection contains 10mg of Chlorphenamine Maleate.  It also contains sodium chloride and Water for Injections.

HOW YOUR MEDICINE WORKS

Chlorphenamine maleate is an antihistamine. Histamine is released into the body during an allergic reaction. It causes some of the main symptoms of hayfever and other allergies.

USES

Chlorphenamineinjection is used to treat allergies.

BEFORE TAKING YOUR MEDICINE

• Tell your doctor if any of the following apply:
• you are pregnant (or intending to become pregnant),
• you are breast-feeding a baby,
• you have ever had to stop taking this or another medicine for this illness because you were allergic to it or it caused problems,
• you have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressive treatment within the past 14 days,
• you have epilepsy, glaucoma, very high blood pressure, heart, liver or chest disease,
• you are being treated for an overactive thyroid or large prostate gland,
• you are taking drugs to treat anxiety or to help you sleep,
• you are taking phenytoin for epilepsy.

Sometimes this medicine may not be suitable and your doctor may want to give you something different. Make sure that your doctor knows what other medicines you are taking, including those you have bought from the chemist.

DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WHILST USING THIS MEDICINE. DO NOT DRIVE OR OPERATE MACHINERY IF THIS INJECTION MAKES YOU FEEL SLEEPY.

Chlorphenamine injection contains less than 1mmol sodium (23mg) per 1m

DOSE

The usual dose for adults is 10mg to 20mg, up to a maximum of 40mg in 24 hours.

The dose for children will be calculated by the doctor, based on either their age or their body weight, using the following table:

• Age 1 month to 1 year Dose 0.25mg/kg
• Age 1 to 5 years Dose 2.5mg to 5mg
• Age 6 to 12 years Dose5mg to 10mg
• Age12 to 18 years Dose10mg to 20mg

The doctor may dilute chlorphenamine injection with sodium chloride 0.9% injection to make it easier to measure and to give the small amount required.

This injection is usually given to you by your doctor. Occasionally the doctor may authorize someone else to give it to you.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPENING THE AMPOULE:

Hold upright and break away from yourself.

SIDE EFFECTS

• Most people do not have any problems after being given this medicine but if you feel drowsy or tired do not drive or operate machinery. Sometimes when the drug is given into a vein, patients may feel giddy or drowsy. This usually passes off.
• There may be a stinging or burning feeling at the site of injection.
• Some people may get an upset tummy, have blurred vision, become jaundiced, have difficulty in passing water or have muscular incoordination.
• Rarely some people may feel their heart beating faster, have chest tightness, or feel dizzy.
• Chlorphenamine injection can very occasionally cause allergic reactions, ringing in the ears, blood problems, irritability, or nightmares.
• Although very rare, elderly people may occasionally become confused
• or children become excitable. If you feel unwell or notice anything which you don’t understand, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

STORING YOUR INJECTION

• If you have to keep chlorphenamine injection at home, keep it in a safe place where children cannot reach it.
• Store below 25ºC. Protect from light.
• Do not use after the date shown as ‘EXP’ on the carton.
